Child labour in Sukkur district reduced, says official
SUKKUR: Deputy Commissioner (DC), Sukkur, Shehzad Tahir Thaheem, said on Sunday that child labour in Sukkur district has been significantly reduced due to the efforts of the Combating Abusive Child Labour (CACL II) Project, which is working with a holistic approach, involving families of child labourers and Government Line Departments.
He said under the CACL II Project, the District Education Plan (DEP) for District Sukkur has been prepared and sent to secretary education, Sindh, for approval. He said the DEP will help the Sukkur Education department to allocate its resources to combat the worst forms of child labour. The DC said the Sukkur district has also established Child Labour Monitoring System (CLMS) and completed the survey in all of the 46 Union Councils (UCs) on child labour. These identified child labourers will be either enrolled in the government schools or will be provided other means of literacy and vocational training.
Thaheem said the Sukkur district has provided training to 2,000 government schoolteachers on child labour issues. He appreciated the efforts of the ED for conducting this four-day training under the CACL II Project. This training has given awareness to the teachers, so they can act as facilitators in their communities for the identification of child labour means and ways to interact with their families to enrol these child labourers in school.
He went on to say that child labourers need special attention and techniques, which participants of the training will acquire through especially designed manuals. This training will also prepare the teachers to cater to the child labourer identified through CLMS.
The health of children improved and they were free from those diseases caused due to their involvement in work after their withdrawal from child labour. Pakistan Workers’ Federation and Employers’ Federation of Pakistan also worked with their member organisations for the elimination of the worst forms of child labour from Sukkur district. These interventions were important steps to make Sukkur a model district for elimination of the worst forms of child labour.
